Peso

A historic monetary unit meaning "weight" (from the Latin pensum) that names eight national currencies still in circulation, each with its ISO code: the Argentine (ARS), Chilean (CLP), Colombian (COP), Cuban (CUP), Dominican (DOP), Mexican (MXN), Philippine piso (PHP), and Uruguayan (UYU) pesos. In Colombia Banco de la República paper was called peso oro from 1923 to 1993, to signal convertibility — lost in 1931; from 1993 the name returned to simply the peso.
