NGC — Numismatic Guaranty Company — is a grading service mainly for coins: it slabs the piece and assigns a Sheldon grade or a Details designation. It is not PMG or PCGS Banknote, which work paper, though PCGS also grades coin. A Details grade flags a problem — cleaning, edge filing, scratches — and is not a full number from 1 to 70. The certificate identifies the object: duplicating a record with the same number would invent a second example.
This collection’s 1761 Utrecht gold ducat holds NGC AU Details · Edge Filing, certificate 4685927-012. KM# 7.4, Fr# 285, Delmonte G# 965. The edge filing is on the label; it is not hidden to “raise” the grade. The 1820 Santa Marta copper, by contrast, is unslabbed: an NGC census for that piece is not invented. Notofilia’s search groups NGC with PMG and PCGS under the slabbed filter, without mixing paper and metal in the same record.
NGC does not appraise. An AU Details is not a price or a market population. Census figures that have not been independently verified are not published. This collection cites the certificate when it exists and leaves unslabbed what has not been sent. The term links encapsulation, the Sheldon scale, and the ducat already published, not a commercial shipping guide.
An NGC Details grade is not rounded up to AU-50 to beautify the record. The ducat’s edge filing is written on label 4685927-012 and transcribed. Santa Marta enters as a contrast: Colombian siege coin, unslabbed, a different mint and metal. The encapsulation article covers PMG and PCGS for paper; this one stays with the coin house.
