Printage: Thomas De La Rue & Co., London. Specimen of the 1 January 1980 date, without a serial prefix; published size 140 × 70 mm. The Bank Note Museum numbers that no-prefix date as Pick 418b — “CIEN PESOS ORO” in filled letters — and distinguishes it from 418a of 1977 and from 418c with prefixes A, B, and C. Numista groups the design under N# 224500 (P# 418 / TBB B958a; Hernández 307 for the circulating note). González White 2019 (p. 86, CIEN PESOS 1977 and 1980 spread) publishes 100,000,000 circulating notes for 1 January 1980, eight digits, serials 00.000.001–100.000.000, T. de la R. imprint; the spread does not give a specimen printage. The OCR jumbles BG# against dates: no guessed BG# is published here. Distinct from the 1980 A–C rows (p. 87). BanRep’s 1980 table records no 100-peso production (that year lists 5- to 50-peso notes); that is not this specimen’s printage. This record does not invent a printage.

The note

The Banco de la República ordered this Santander and Capitol one-hundred-peso oro from Thomas De La Rue of London. The Bank Note Museum numbers Pick 418 in 1977 and 1980 and distinguishes three letters: 418a (1 January 1977, hollow letters), 418b (1 January 1980, no prefix, filled letters), and 418c (the same date with prefixes A, B, or C). Numista groups the design under N# 224500 (P# 418 / TBB B957–B958; Hernández 304–310) and cites TBB B958a / Hernández 307 for the 1980 date without a prefix. This piece is a specimen of that 418b date: red serials 00000000, twice; a diagonal SPECIMEN overprint; “SPECIMEN / NO VALUE” ovals; “SPECIMEN Nº 027” on the lower margin; and three cancellation punches. An additional oval reads “IMPRENTA DE BILLETES DE BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA.” The printed date is “1 DE ENERO DE 1980.” The face, violet on a pink ground, carries at right the portrait labelled “SANTANDER,” at center the promise to pay the bearer one hundred gold pesos, and at left the registration device — books, quill, and inkwell. The signatures are those of Rafael Gama Quijano (gerente) and Francisco José Ortega (secretario), the pair catalogues assign to that date (RGQ, FJO). The back shows Bogotá’s National Capitol — “CAPITOLIO NACIONAL / BOGOTÁ” — the same book device, and the figures 100. González White 2019 (p. 86) notes a Liberty-emblem watermark for rows 307 to 314. Catalogues give Thomas De La Rue as the type’s printer. Distinct from 418a of 1977, from 418c with a series letter, from the 1960 5 pesos oro specimen (Pick 405s), and from the 1983 2,000 pesos oro specimen (Pick 430as, SPECIMEN Nº 030). This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (p. 86) publishes 100,000,000 notes for the circulating 1 January 1980 date, eight digits, T. de la R.; it does not give a specimen printage. Numista groups the design under N# 224500 and marks the circulating 418b / TBB B958a date’s frequency at 38% among owners of the type; no specimen frequency is published here. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 418b as that no-prefix date, TDLR, with Santander on the face and the Capitol on the back. BanRep’s 1980 table records no 100-peso notes. This record does not invent a specimen printage or replace the circulating emisión with a BanRep denomination-year total.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for SPECIMEN Nº 027 of this Pick 418s has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
