Printage
Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, London. Banco de la República circulation issue; date on the note 1 January 1980. Eight digits, no series letter and no R prefix. González White 2019 (p. 86) publishes 100,000,000 notes, serials 00.000.001–100.000.000, for that T. de la R. date (Santander / Capitol); serial 08648220 sits in that range and does not match the R-replacement rows or the 1980 A, B, and C prefixes (p. 87). The spread’s OCR jumbles BG# against dates: no guessed BG# is published here. Published size: 140 × 70 mm. The Bank Note Museum numbers Pick 418b as the 01.01.1980 without a serial prefix and with filled denomination letters, distinct from 418a of 1977 (hollow letters) and from 418c with prefix A, B, or C. Numista groups the design under N# 224500 and lists this date as P# 418b / TBB B958a / Hernández 307. BanRep’s 1980 table publishes no 100-peso figure — that cell is empty; the year’s 146.3 million covers 5-, 10-, 20-, and 50-peso notes. This record does not invent a denomination-year total.

The note

The Banco de la República ordered this one-hundred-peso oro of the Pick 418 family (1977–1980) from Thomas De La Rue in London. The face, violet on a pink and tan underprint, carries Francisco de Paula Santander’s portrait at right — the paper reads “SANTANDER” — and at left the figure 100 with the legend “CIEN PESOS ORO” in filled letters. Above are “EL BANCO DE LA REPÚBLICA” and “PAGARÁ AL PORTADOR.” The serials are in red: 08648220, once at upper right and once at lower left. There is no series letter and no R prefix. The printed date is “1 DE ENERO DE 1980.” The signatures are those of Rafael Gama Quijano (gerente) and Francisco José Ortega (secretario), the pair on other BanRep 1980 dates. The registration device — quill, book, and sheets — aligns with the same motif on the back. The back shows the Capitolio Nacional in Bogotá, labelled “CAPITOLIO NACIONAL BOGOTÁ,” the figures 100, and the imprint “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED.” González White places the Liberty-emblem watermark on this spread (p. 86) for numbers 307–314. Type 418b, per the Bank Note Museum, is 1 January 1980 without a prefix. Distinct from Pick 418a of 1977 — hollow letters — from 418c with prefixes A, B, or C, from the R replacements, and from the Nariño one-hundred that begins in 1983 (Pick 426). This collection piece is shown unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (p. 86) publishes 100,000,000 notes for the circulating 1 January 1980 date, eight digits, no series, T. de la R., serials 00.000.001–100.000.000; serial 08648220 sits in that range. It does not give a separate printage for this piece. Numista groups the design under N# 224500 and lists this date as P# 418b / TBB B958a / Hernández 307, without a serial prefix. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 418b as 01.01.1980 without a prefix, with filled denomination letters. BanRep’s 1980 table publishes no 100-peso figure: that cell is empty, and the year’s 146.3 million is the 5-, 10-, 20-, and 50-peso total, not this date’s printage. This record does not invent a printage or a denomination-year total. Price columns are not republished.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 08648220 has not been independently verified. The note is shown unslabbed.
