Printage
Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, London. Banco de la República circulation issue; date on the note 20 July 1974. Ten digits, no series letter and no R prefix. González White 2019 (p. 79) publishes 100,000,000 notes for that TDLR date, nine-digit serials 170.000.001–270.000.000, and an R replacement 170.001.660–171.318.448; Hernández (8th ed., 2023) gives the replacement interval 170554001–171318448. Serial 2467354822 is printed with ten digits and no R: it is not forced into the nine-digit band or the replacement range. The spread’s OCR jumbles BG# against dates: no guessed BG# is published here. Published size: 140 × 70 mm. The Bank Note Museum groups type 414 under 20.07.1973 and 20.07.1974. BanRep’s 1973 and 1974 tables record no 50-peso notes those calendar years — denomination-year totals, not this date’s printage. This record does not replace the catalogue emisión with those totals.

The note

The Banco de la República ordered this fifty-peso oro of the Pick 414 family (1973–1974) from Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, in London. The face, purple on a multicolour underprint, carries Camilo Torres Tenorio’s portrait at right — labelled “CAMILO TORRES” — and, at center, the promise to pay the bearer fifty gold pesos. The serials are in red: 2467354822, twice, ten digits and no series letter. The printed date is “BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA 20 DE JULIO DE 1974.” The signatures are those of Germán Botero de los Ríos (gerente) and Antonio José Gutiérrez (secretario), the pair Numista assigns to this date (GBR, AJG). There is no R prefix and no asterisk between GERENTE and SECRETARIO: it is not the 1974 replacement. The back shows Colombian orchids — labelled “ORQUÍDEAS COLOMBIANAS”; Cattleya trianae in English-language catalogs — the national arms, and the figures 50. The imprint reads “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED.” That imprint distinguishes type 414 from the Pick 425 fifty-peso oro of 1984–1986, printed at the Imprenta de Billetes in Bogotá. Banknote World records a yellow security thread and a Camilo Torres watermark on this date. Distinct from the Pick 390 two-peso oro — the same patriot, engraved by the American Bank Note Company. This collection piece is shown unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (p. 79) publishes 100,000,000 notes for the circulating 20 July 1974 date, TDLR, nine-digit serials 170.000.001–270.000.000, and an R replacement. Serial 2467354822 is printed with ten digits and matches neither that band nor the R interval. It does not give a separate printage for this piece. Numista groups the 1973–1974 design under N# 211665 and cites this date as TBB B953b / Hernández 265, signatures GBR and AJG. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 414 as 20.07.1973 and 20.07.1974, TDLR, Camilo Torres and orchids. BanRep’s 1973 and 1974 tables record no 50-peso notes. This record does not invent a printage or force the ten-digit serial into the nine-digit emisión.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 2467354822 has not been independently verified. The note is shown unslabbed.
