Imprenta de Billetes, Bogotá. Banco de la República circulation issue; date on the note 1 January 1983. Nine digits, no series letter. González White 2019 (pp. 73–74) lists ENERO 1º 1983 dates on the VEINTE PESOS 1975–1983 spread, with ordinary and asterisk-replacement rows; the extract jumbles BG# against dates, and this record does not publish a guessed BG# or emisión. Hernández (8th ed., 2023) numbers the ordinary 1 January 1983 as Cód. 243 — Numista concurs Hernández 243, P# 409d, and TBB B951l; Cód. 244 is the replacement with an asterisk on the face. Serial 056462955 is an ordinary nine-digit number, outside González White’s asterisk bands on that spread (around 00.100.xxx–00.273.xxx) and outside Hernández’s annex 2 interval for this date (00102221–00171449). The Bank Note Museum groups type 409d under 01.04.1979, 01.01.1981, 01.01.1982, and 01.01.1983, distinct from 409a–c (1966–1977). Published size: 140 × 70 mm. No security thread and no watermark. Hernández notes that the twenty-peso oro ended in 1983, replaced by copper twenty-peso coins. BanRep’s 1983 table records 60.5 million 20-peso notes: all production of that face value that year, not this date’s printage.

The note

The Banco de la República printed this twenty-peso oro at its Imprenta de Billetes, opened in Bogotá on 23 October 1959. It is the last date of the Caldas / Museo del Oro type: Hernández (8th ed., 2023) places the denomination’s start in 1927 and its end in 1983, when copper twenty-peso coins replaced it. The face, brown, green, orange, and violet on a multicolour underprint, carries Francisco José de Caldas’s portrait at right — labelled “CALDAS” under the oval — with his hand on a terrestrial globe. At center is the promise to pay the bearer twenty gold pesos and the figure 20. The serials are in red: 056462955, once at mid-left and once at lower right. There is no series letter. The printed date is “ENERO 1º DE 1983,” with “BOGOTÁ” at left and “COLOMBIA” at right. The signatures are those of Hugo Palacios Mejía (gerente general) and Francisco José Ortega (secretario), the pair Numista assigns to this date (HPM, FJO) and the pair Banknote World records on P-409d.4. There is no asterisk by the titles: it is not a replacement and not Cód. 244. The back, brown in a multicolour frame, shows objects from the Museo del Oro — labelled on the paper — the bank’s Liberty seal (“BANCO DE LA REPÚBLICA / COLOMBIA”), and the figures 20. Type 409d, per the Bank Note Museum, covers 01.04.1979, 01.01.1981, 01.01.1982, and 01.01.1983; Numista groups the 1966–1983 design under N# 202344 and cites Hernández 243 and TBB B951l for this date, without a thread. Distinct from 409a (1966–1973), from 409b and 409c of 1974–1977, and from the asterisk replacements. This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (pp. 73–74) lists 1 January 1983 on the 1975–1983 20-peso spread, with ordinary and asterisk-replacement rows; this record does not publish a guessed BG# or emisión from the OCR. Hernández (8th ed., 2023) numbers the ordinary row Cód. 243 and the asterisk replacement Cód. 244. Serial 056462955 does not sit in White’s bands on that spread nor in the annex 2 interval for this date. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 409d as the 01.04.1979 and 01.01.1981–1983 dates: Caldas and globe on the face, Museo del Oro on the back. Numista groups the design under N# 202344 and marks the 01.01.1983 no-thread date’s frequency at 43% among owners of the type. It is neither a proof, a specimen, nor a replacement, nor the 409a–c dates. Hernández price columns are not republished. BanRep’s 1983 table (60.5 million 20-peso notes) is a denomination-year total, not this date’s printage. This record does not replace that figure with a date printage.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 056462955 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
