Printage
Imprenta de Billetes, Bogotá. Banco de la República circulation issue; date on the note 7 August 1979. Eight digits, no series letter. González White 2019 (p. 68) lists AGOSTO 7 1979 dates on the DIEZ PESOS 1975–1980 spread, with ordinary and asterisk-replacement rows; the extract jumbles BG# against dates, and this record does not publish a guessed BG#. Hernández (8th ed., 2023) numbers the ordinary 7 August 1979 as Cód. 205 — Numista concurs Hernández 205, P# 407g, and TBB B950m; Cód. 206 is the replacement with an asterisk on the face, between the titles (TBB B950mr). Serial 98040194 is an ordinary eight-digit number, outside González White’s asterisk bands on that spread (around 00.100.xxx–00.472.xxx). The Bank Note Museum groups type 407g under 07.08.1979 and 07.08.1980, without a series letter, distinct from 407f (1974–1978) and from 407h of 1980 with series AZ. Published size: 140 × 70 mm. No security thread and no watermark. BanRep’s 1979 table records 58.75 million 10-peso notes: all production of that face value that year, not this date’s printage.

The note

The Banco de la República printed this ten-peso oro at its Imprenta de Billetes, opened in Bogotá on 23 October 1959. The face, lilac, green, blue, and brown on a multicolour underprint, carries Antonio Nariño’s portrait in uniform at left — labelled “NARIÑO” under the bust — and an Andean condor perched on the figure 10 at right. At center is the promise to pay the bearer ten gold pesos. The serials are in red: 98040194, once at mid-left and once at upper right. There is no series letter. The printed date is “AGOSTO 7 DE 1979” over “BOGOTA, COLOMBIA.” The signatures are those of Rafael Gama Quijano (gerente) and Francisco José Ortega (secretario), the pair Numista assigns to this date (RGQ, FJO) and the pair Banknote World records on P-407g.1. There is no asterisk between GERENTE and SECRETARIO: it is not a replacement and not Cód. 206 / TBB B950mr. The back, slate blue in a multicolour frame, shows the pre-Columbian statues of the San Agustín Archaeological Park — labelled on the paper — the bank’s Liberty seal (“REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA / BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA”), and the figures 10. Type 407g, per the Bank Note Museum, covers 07.08.1979 and 07.08.1980 without a series letter; Numista groups the 1963–1980 design under N# 203973 and cites Hernández 205 and TBB B950m for this date, without a thread. Distinct from 407f of 1974–1978, from this case’s July 1976 replacement (serial 00142533), from 407h of 1980 with series AZ, and from the 1943 ABNC 10 pesos oro (Pick 389b). This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (p. 68) lists 7 August 1979 on the 1975–1980 10-peso spread, with ordinary and asterisk-replacement rows; this record does not publish a guessed BG# or emisión from the OCR. Hernández (8th ed., 2023) numbers the ordinary row Cód. 205 and the asterisk replacement Cód. 206. Serial 98040194 does not sit in White’s bands on that spread. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 407g as the 07.08.1979 and 07.08.1980 dates, without a series letter: Nariño and condor on the face, San Agustín on the back. Numista groups the design under N# 203973 and marks the 07.08.1979 no-thread date’s frequency at 12% among owners of the type. It is neither a proof, a specimen, nor a replacement, nor the Pick 389b 10 pesos oro of 1943 nor the Pick 407f replacement of 1976. Hernández price columns are not republished. BanRep’s 1979 table (58.75 million 10-peso notes) is a denomination-year total, not this date’s printage. This record does not replace that figure with a date printage.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 98040194 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
