The note

The Banco de la República ordered this ten-peso oro of the Pick 407 family (1963–1980) from its own Imprenta de Billetes, opened in Bogotá on 23 October 1959. The face, lilac and slate blue on a green and multicolour underprint, carries Antonio Nariño’s portrait at left — named under the oval — and an Andean condor on a rock at right. At center is the promise to pay the bearer ten gold pesos. The serials are in red: 00142533, once at mid-left and once at upper right. The printed date is “JULIO 20 DE 1976” over “BOGOTA, COLOMBIA.” The signatures are those of Germán Botero de los Ríos (gerente) and Antonio José Gutiérrez (secretario), the pair Numista assigns to this date (GBR"₂, AJG). The replacement diagnostic is not in the serial: it is the small six-pointed black asterisk between the titles GERENTE and SECRETARIO. Colombian catalogs describe the 20 July 1976 variety that way. Pick numbers the ordinary type as 407f; replacements of that date are listed by The Banknote Book (B950kr) and Hernández (199/201). The back shows the pre-Columbian statues of the San Agustín Archaeological Park, the bank’s Liberty seal, and the figures 10. Type 407f, per the Bank Note Museum, has no security thread. This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed. It should not be confused with the ordinary issue of the same date (TBB B950k; Hernández 198/200), which does not carry the asterisk between the titles.

Scarcity and printage

The 20 July 1976 replacement is a recognized variety and substantially scarcer than the ordinary issue of that date. Numista estimates the replacement at about 0.2% of recorded examples of Pick 407; that figure is a catalog-population estimate, not an official printage. Pick does not list replacements separately. This record does not invent a printage.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 00142533 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
