Printage
Imprenta de Billetes, Bogotá. Banco de la República circulation issue; date on the note 20 July 1977. Published size: 140 × 70 mm. Eight-digit serial, no series letter, and no printer imprint. González White 2019 (p. 46) numbers this date BG# 100: IBB, last issue of the 2-peso denomination, 50,000,000 notes, serials 00.000.001 / 50.000.000. Serial 22214695 sits in that range. BG# 101 is the asterisk replacement of the same date (00.104.171 / 00.191.883). Hernández (8th ed., 2023) gives the annex-2 asterisk interval 00104171–00194009; 22214695 sits outside it. Numista concurs Hernández 104, P# 413b, and TBB B948f for the ordinary 20 July 1977. The Bank Note Museum groups type 413b under 20.07.1976, 01.01.1977, and 20.07.1977 — small serial, far from the upper border — distinct from 413a of 1972–1973 (ABNC). BanRep’s 1977 table records 118.9 million 2-peso notes: all production of that face value that year, not this date’s printage.

The note

The Banco de la República printed this two-peso oro at its Imprenta de Billetes, opened in Bogotá on 23 October 1959. González White 2019 places the 1972 and 1973 dates with ABNC and the 1976 and 1977 dates with IBB; all are eight digits and without a printer imprint. The face, violet on a pink, yellow, and green multicolour underprint, carries at left the portrait of Policarpa Salavarrieta — named under the oval — and at center the promise to pay the bearer two gold pesos. The serials are in red: 22214695, once vertically to the right of the portrait and once horizontally at upper right. There is no series letter. The printed date is “JULIO 20 DE 1977” over “BOGOTA COLOMBIA.” The signatures are those of Germán Botero de los Ríos (gerente) and Antonio José Gutiérrez (secretario): Numista assigns the pair GBR₂ and AJG₂ to this date; González White places Botero as gerente from 1970 to 1978. There is no asterisk beside GERENTE or the date: it is not a replacement and not BG# 101. The back, brown on the same multicolour, shows the Muisca-style raft from the Museo del Oro, Liberty’s seal (“BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA / BOGOTA COLOMBIA”), and the legend “DOS PESOS ORO.” Type 413b, per the Bank Note Museum, covers 1976–1977 with a small serial far from the upper border. Numista groups the 1972–1977 design under N# 205262 and cites Hernández 104 and TBB B948f for this date. González White closes paper two-peso oro on 20 July 1977, replaced by coin. It is not the 1944 Series I ABNC 2 pesos oro (Pick 390b), nor the 1955 Series GG (Pick 390d), documented on another record in this case. This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (BG# 100, p. 46) publishes 50,000,000 notes for the circulating 20 July 1977 date, IBB, eight digits, serials 00.000.001–50,000,000; serial 22214695 sits in that range. BG# 101 is the asterisk replacement of that date. Hernández (8th ed., 2023) numbers the ordinary row Hernández 104 and gives the annex-2 interval 00104171–00194009, which does not include 22214695. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 413b as the 1976–1977 dates: Policarpa on the face and the Muisca raft on the back. Numista groups the design under N# 205262 and marks the ordinary 20.07.1977 date’s frequency at 39% among owners of the type. It is neither a proof, a specimen, nor a replacement, nor the Pick 390 2 pesos oro of 1944 or 1955. Hernández price columns are not republished. BanRep’s 1977 table (118.9 million 2-peso notes) is a denomination-year total, not this date’s printage. This record does not replace the BG# 100 emisión with that total.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 22214695 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
