The note

The Banco de la República ordered this 1960 five-peso oro from Thomas De La Rue of London. González White 2019 numbers it BG# 125 (p. 56): 20 July 1960, Series M, eight digits, Thomas de la Rue imprint. The Bank Note Museum catalogs it as Pick 405, a single date, and distinguishes it from Pick 399 — the same José María Córdova portrait, the old bank building on the back. Numista groups the design under N# 302384 (P# 405 / TBB B940; Hernández 127). This piece is a specimen: red serials 00000000, twice, with no SPECIMEN or MUESTRA overprint and no cancellation punches. The printed date is “BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA / 20 DE JULIO DE 1960.” The face, green on a cream ground, carries at left the portrait labelled “CORDOBA” — González White notes that the general’s surname is spelled Córdoba on the paper — at center a seated female allegory over a landscape of mountains and palms, and at right a 5 in a medallion. The signatures are those of Jorge Cortés Boshell (gerente) and Germán Botero de los Ríos (secretario), the pair Numista and González White assign to that date (JCB, GBR). The green back shows the new Banco de la República building in Bogotá — “EDIFICIO DEL BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA EN BOGOTÁ” — flanked by two 5s. The face imprint reads “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COY LTD LONDRES, INGLATERRA.” This record gathers the face and back of the same unslabbed note, in a sleeve.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (BG# 125, p. 56) publishes 30,000,000 notes for the circulating 20 July 1960 date, Series M, eight digits, and notes numbering in red and in sepia; it does not give a specimen printage. Numista groups the design under N# 302384, rarity index 68, and lists the date as a circulating note (signatures JCB and GBR); it does not mark a specimen row. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 405 as that date, TDLR, with the new bank building on the back. This record does not invent a specimen printage or replace that BG# emisión with a BanRep denomination-year total.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 00000000 of this Pick 405s has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, unslabbed.
