The note
The Jorge Eliécer Gaitán one-thousand in the reduced 130 × 65 mm format is Pick 456 (2005–2016) / TBB B986, printed by the Imprenta de Billetes. González White numbers the reduced dates BG# 439-r; this piece carries “23 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2010,” BG# 439-r/13 (p. 112), which the Bank Note Museum marks 456m. The signatures are those of José Darío Uribe Escobar, general manager, and José Tolosa Buitrago, executive manager: the pair Numista assigns to that date (TBB B986m; Hernández# 452). On 28 October 2011 Banknote News recorded the new date and the signature change from B986l, Uribe and Hernández, to Uribe and Tolosa. Serial 42222224 appears twice on the face, in black, at upper right and lower left; eight digits, no prefix. It is not a low serial (1–100). It is a radar: 42222224 reads the same forwards and backwards. It is not binary, solid, a ladder, or a repeater, and it carries no replacement marker (asterisk, star, R, or diamond). The square at left is the tactile mark, not a replacement diamond. The face, in orange and ochre, shows Gaitán at right — named under the portrait — and, at centre, the crowd as seen from Medellín’s Hotel Nutibara; at left, the scales registration device and the 1000. The back shows him waving his hat, with the quotations “Yo no soy un hombre, soy un pueblo.” and “El pueblo es superior a sus dirigentes.”, the manuscript signature, the Liberty seal, and the 1000. It should not be confused with the Galán one-thousand pesos oro (Pick 421), the large 140 × 70 mm format (Pick 450), the 2000, 2008, and 2011 maculatures in this case, or 10 June 2011 (Pick 456n). This record gathers both sides of the same unslabbed note.
The bank
Jorge Eliécer Gaitán (1903–1948) has occupied the Banco de la República one-thousand since the first catalogued date, 7 August 2001, put into circulation in 2002 at 140 × 70 mm. In 2005–2006 the bank cut the format to 130 × 65 mm, renewed the watermark — Gaitán’s portrait — and kept printing at the Imprenta de Billetes. The face takes the crowd from a balcony of the Hotel Nutibara; González White places the portrait drawing on a photograph by Sady González taken from that balcony. The back is the candidate’s greeting of 23 September 1945. The reduced type circulated from 17 November 2006. Numista dates this printed date, 23 November 2010, into circulation on 9 September 2011: it is the first of the reduced format with José Tolosa as executive manager. The type ran through 2016; González White notes that no replacements are recorded.
Scarcity and printage
González White 2019 (BG# 439-r/13, p. 112) publishes no emisión figure for 23 November 2010. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 456 as the 2005–2016 130 × 65 mm type and marks 456m for that date. Numista groups the design under N# 205282 and marks the 23.11.2010 date’s frequency at 5% among owners of the type; that figure is for the date, not for radars. BanRep’s annual production table assigns 246.7 million pieces to every 1,000-peso note of 2010 and 196.1 million to those of 2011; Tesorería deliveries match. The printed date is 2010 and the circulation Numista records is 9 September 2011: neither total is the printage of this date, signature pair, or serial. An eight-digit radar is a collector pattern; this record does not invent a population for that pattern.
Population
A PMG or PCGS census for serial 42222224 has not been independently verified. The note is shown unslabbed. The photographs are not enough to assign a numeric grade.
