U.S. Mint puts a 9/11 50-cent coin on sale

Infobae (Jeremías Baldantoni, 12 September 2026) reports that the United States Mint opened a preorder window on Thursday 10 September 2026 for a Semiquincentennial half dollar — the Semiquincentennial Enduring Liberty Half Dollar — marking the 25th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks. The coins are not part of Notofilia’s virtual collection.

Philadelphia, with NEVER FORGET

Infobae places the striking at the Philadelphia Mint. CoinWeek, as cited in the note, describes a privy mark: the date of the attacks ringed by NEVER FORGET. Ordering closes on 25 September at 3 p.m. Eastern time. Infobae adds that, for now, the preorder has no household purchase limit, and that shipping begins on 3 December 2026.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in a 9 September statement Infobae quotes in Spanish, frames the issue as honouring those who were lost and those who risked their lives in the rescue.

List price, not a valuation

Infobae cites 20-coin rolls at US$40 and 100-coin bags at US$100. Those are Mint preorder prices, not a hammer. The note gives 11.34 g, 30.61 mm, 8.33% nickel with the balance copper, circulating quality (not proof), and a reeded edge with 150 reeds. The Mint, Infobae says, announced no mintage cap for this commercial issue: the quantity will depend on demand in the order window.

A separate W issue, not for sale

Infobae, citing GlobeNewswire, keeps distinct a mintage of 2,983 West Point halves with the legend ALWAYS REMEMBER, one for each name on the Memorial — victims of 2001 and of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Infobae places those coins with the families of the victims; they were not offered for public sale. CoinNews, on 10 September, describes the same figure as a presentation to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum. In both accounts they are a different type from this P preorder.
