Diario de Navarra (Ana M.ª Esparza Aós, 14 September 2026) reports that the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre–Real Casa de la Moneda is now showing the nine coins of the series “Personajes de Francisco Ibáñez.” The issue marks the 90th anniversary of the cartoonist’s birth (Barcelona, 15 March 1936–15 July 2023). They are collector coins, not circulating currency, and they are not in Notofilia’s virtual collection.
Nine characters, one obverse
The obverse, shared by all nine, shows a self-portrait of Ibáñez. At right, in a cloud, are the legend ESPAÑA and the year 2026. On the reverse, each character moves along an action line that ends in a graphic burst, with the €1.50 face and the mint mark. Diario de Navarra gives this order: Mortadelo, Professor Bacterio, Rompetechos, Filemón, Ofelia, Pepe Gotera, the Superintendent, Botones Sacarino, and Otilio.
Each piece is 38.75 mm, 25.8 g, copper plated with 999 silver, round, with a plain edge. Diario de Navarra places the sale in individual coincards and, for the full set, a folder or album. The FNMT may strike up to 10,000 of each character.
List price, not a market quote
Diario de Navarra gives €29 including VAT per coin. The BOE (opens in a new tab) (Order ECM/453/2026 of 7 May) set €23.97 excluding VAT: at 21% VAT that matches the €29. It is the mint’s sale price, not a hammer. The note places the release in October, on the FNMT website and through usual dealers; the BOE had envisaged the second four-month period of the year. The mint also released a video (opens in a new tab) of how the pieces are struck.
