A New Fire 20-peso is listed at 500,000 pesos

TV Azteca Guerrero (Roberto Soberanis, 25 September 2026) reports an offer of 500,000 pesos for the 20-peso coin of Xiuhtecuhtli, the Lord of Fire. On selling platforms, the note says, it is called the “New Fire coin.” The note presents that coin, already in the process of withdrawal, as one that sells for as much as that sum. The text describes one user’s offer on an online shop. It does not name the platform, the year on the die, or the condition. That coin is not in Notofilia’s virtual collection.

What the decree sets

The decree of 6 January 2000 (opens in a new tab), in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, authorizes two bimetallic 20-peso coins for the arrival of the year 2000 and the start of the third millennium. On the first, the obverse is the national coat of arms. The reverse shows Xiuhtecuhtli in left profile, holding the New Fire torch, with the legends FUEGO NUEVO and XIUHTECUHTLI, the Casa de Moneda mint mark, the $20 sign, and the year of striking, inside a stylized solar-ray ring from the Sun Stone. It is round, 32.0 mm across, with a discontinuous reeded edge and a weight of 15.945 g: a cupronickel center (75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel, 7.355 g) and a bronze-aluminum ring (8.590 g). Striking is limited to what Banco de México orders in 2000 and 2001. The decree does not publish a mintage. The second coin in the same text carries the bust of Octavio Paz.

Still worth twenty pesos

Banco de México lists this 20 pesos among the family C coins being withdrawn (opens in a new tab). It entered circulation on 3 April 2000. It keeps its liberatory power: it is worth the 20 pesos it states. When it reaches a bank, the institution must set it aside and not pay it out to the public again. That sheet describes the center as alpaca plateada (nickel silver) and the ring as bronze-aluminum, at the same weight of 15.945 g. The Guerrero note prints 15.05 g, a bronze-aluminum center, a stainless-steel ring, and the national coat of arms on the reverse.

A listing is not a hammer

The 500,000 pesos are an asking price that TV Azteca Guerrero (opens in a new tab) attributes to an online shop. The note does not document a completed sale or a certificate.
