The note
The Banco Central del Ecuador, opened on 10 August 1927, held the monopoly of sucre issue until dollarization. This 100-sucre belongs to type Pick 123A (Numista N# 209287): a finer portrait of Simón Bolívar at centre, dark clouds behind, a black face on a multicolour underprint, and a purple back with a new rendition of the national arms. The Standard Catalog letters 123Ab for the 20 August 1993 date with a blue serial; 123Aa covers 1991 and 123Ac later dates with a black serial. Banknote World records series WF on 123Ab.5. It is not Pick 123 of 1986–1990, a different engraving. The face reads “BANCO CENTRAL DEL ECUADOR,” “QUITO,” at left and the date at right; “SERIE WF” twice; 100 in the four corners and in two cartouches; at the foot, “CIEN SUCRES” and three signatures — Gerente General, Superintendent of Banks, and Vocal. The general manager reads as Augusto de la Torre; the other two signatures are not transcribed here with certainty. There is no Thomas De La Rue imprint on the paper; type sources assign that house. The back centres the condor over the oval of Chimborazo and the Guayas, with “CIEN SUCRES” at the foot. These two pieces — WF 00000002 and WF 00000003 — are consecutive at the start of that series letter. They are not specimens (the counter is not 00000000) and not paper of the 2000–2001 exchange: they are circulating sucres, now demonetized. Each is shown unslabbed.
Scarcity and printage
Numista groups the type under N# 209287 (P# 123A, 1988–1997) and marks the 20 August 1993 blue-serial date as P# 123Ab, with a 17% frequency among owners of the type; that figure is a catalog-population estimate, not an official printage. Banknote World cites series WF on 123Ab.5. No BCE printage for that date or for letter WF has been verified. Serials 00000002 and 00000003 are very low counters (2 and 3 on the eight-digit width), not ordinary numbers of that series. This record does not invent a print figure or a price.
Population
A PMG or PCGS census has not been independently verified for WF 00000002 or WF 00000003. Both notes are shown unslabbed.
