The note
This paper is not a Banco de la República note and not legal tender. It is a fundraising bond of the Dirección Liberal Nacional, titled BONO DE RECONQUISTA DEL PODER. The face, in reddish brown and pale blue, carries three ovals labeled HERRERA, GAITÁN, and URIBE URIBE — Benjamín Herrera, Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, and Rafael Uribe Uribe — the face value DIEZ PESOS, SERIE C and No. 2380, and the figure 10 in the corners. The borders read DIRECCIÓN LIBERAL NACIONAL. Manuscript signatures sit over EL TESORERO GENERAL and EL SECRETARIO; they are not transcribed. The counterfoil, still joined at the perforation, is headed BONO DE LA RECONQUISTA DEL PODER — with the article, unlike the bond — and leaves blank the lines No., Tenedor, Valor, and Fecha. The other side of the booklet shows the bond’s back: a red frame on a diamond ground, with “Un esfuerzo colectivo para el triunfo de un gobierno del pueblo, por el pueblo y para el pueblo.” and LIBERALES, CEDULAOS! The back of the counterfoil is blank. No Pick number, González White BG#, or Hernández Cód. is invented for it. It is not the 1943 10 pesos oro (Pick 389) or the Banco de la República Gaitán one-thousand.
The campaign
The paper carries no date and no imprint. The title repeats the slogan with which Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, after the 1946 presidential election, replaced “¡Por la restauración moral de la República!” González Contreras places that second discursive moment, “¡Por la reconquista del poder!,” between 1946 and Gaitán’s assassination on 9 April 1948 (Desafíos, vol. 32, no. 2, 2020). The bond names the Dirección Liberal Nacional and portrays Gaitán between Benjamín Herrera and Rafael Uribe Uribe. LIBERALES, CEDULAOS! calls holders to obtain the cédula, the document required in order to vote. This record assigns it neither a day nor a decree. A December 2020 dispersal catalog of the Asociación C&C lists another denomination of the same title: 1 peso, Series A, No. 09590, with the three portraits. That example shows a multi-series issue; it is not this ten pesos, Series C, No. 2380.
Scarcity and printage
There is no Pick, Hernández Cód., or González White BG# for this bond, and no published printage. The December 2020 C&C dispersal catalog documents a Series A one-peso, No. 09590, not a census of this Series C ten-peso. No rarity number is assigned. The attached counterfoil is part of the piece.
