The Bank Note Museum marks Pick 450 as 2001–2005 and 450a = 07.08.2001: there is no letter for a 16.08.2000. Numista groups the large format under N# 210180 (TBB B985; Hernández# 437–443) and assigns the MUM / GHC pair to the 2001–2004 dates. BanRep’s 2000 production of 1,000-peso notes is 175 million pieces: that is every note of that face value that year — still the earlier Galán type — not the printage of this date or this error. No printage is published here.

The note
The Jorge Eliécer Gaitán one-thousand in the large 140 × 70 mm format is Pick 450 (2001–2005) / TBB B985, printed by the Imprenta de Billetes. González White numbers those dates BG# 439. On the face of this piece the line “16 DE AGOSTO DE 2000” is read under the signatures: it sits in its place, not in a strip along the edge. The signatures are those of Miguel Urrutia Montoya, general manager, and Gerardo Hernández Correa, executive manager: the pair Numista assigns to the 2001–2004 dates, before the change to José Darío Uribe in 2005. Serial 693949988 appears twice on the face, in black, at upper right and lower left; nine digits, no prefix. It is not a low serial and not a collector pattern (radar, binary, solid, or ladder). The face, in orange and ochre, shows Gaitán at right and, at centre, the crowd as seen from Medellín’s Hotel Nutibara; at left, the scales registration device and the 1000. The back shows him waving his hat, with the quotations “Yo no soy un hombre, soy un pueblo” and “El pueblo es superior a sus dirigentes,” the manuscript signature, the Liberty seal, and the printer’s imprint. What distinguishes the piece is not only the date — the catalogues publish no 16.08.2000 for this type; the first listed is 7.08.2001 (450a / 439-a) — but the cut: the rectangle is complete, with no sheet-margin flap and no color bars, yet the upper edge sits tighter against the 1000 and the upper serial than the lower margin, where the iridescent band is fully present. It is an off-center cut, a guillotine maculature, not a butterfly. It should not be confused with the reduced 130 × 65 mm one-thousand (Pick 456; eight digits), with the 18.08.2008 cut (serial 23085962) that carries the date to the opposite edge, or with this case’s 10.06.2011 butterfly (serial 11508701). This record gathers both sides of the same unslabbed note, in a sleeve.
The bank
Jorge Eliécer Gaitán (1903–1948) has occupied the Banco de la República one-thousand since the first catalogued date, 7 August 2001, put into circulation in 2002 at 140 × 70 mm. González White notes nine issues in that large format before the cut to 130 × 65 mm in 2005–2006. The face takes the crowd from a balcony of the Hotel Nutibara; the back, the candidate’s greeting of 23 September 1945. This record does not document an example of the published dates: it documents a cutting maculature with a plate date, 16 August 2000, that the Colombian catalogue, the Bank Note Museum, and Numista do not list.
Scarcity and printage
González White 2019 (BG# 439, pp. 110–111) publishes no 16 August 2000: the first row is 439-a, 7 August 2001, with an emisión of 98,050,000. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 450 as the 2001–2005 140 × 70 mm type and assigns no letter to a 16.08.2000. Numista groups the large design under N# 210180; the frequencies it marks are for the ordinary 2001–2005 dates, not for maculatures. BanRep’s annual production table assigns 175 million pieces to every 1,000-peso note of 2000: that is the denomination total for that year, still the Galán type, not the printage of a Gaitán date or a cutting error. An off-center cut with an unlisted date is a showcase piece; this record does not invent a population for that error.
Population
A PMG or PCGS census for serial 693949988 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, apparently uncirculated, unslabbed. The error is a production fault, not a grading certificate.
