The note

The Banco de la República ordered this one-peso oro of the Pick 380 family (1929–1954) from the American Bank Note Company in New York. The face, blue on an orange and green multicolour underprint, carries at left the portrait of Francisco de Paula Santander and a standing allegorical figure, at center the figure 1 with the legend “UN PESO ORO,” and at right the bust of Simón Bolívar, named “BOLIVAR” under the oval. The serials are in red: 52170492, once at upper right and once at lower left. The legend “SERIE HH” appears twice in black, flanking the central 1. The printed date is “BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA. / 1º DE ENERO DE 1954.” The signatures are those of Luis Ángel Arango (gerente) and Eduardo Arias Robledo (secretario), the pair Numista assigns to 1954 (LAA₂, EAR). The blue back shows Liberty’s head in a medallion reading “BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA • BOGOTÁ COLOMBIA,” the figures 1 at each flank, and the imprint “AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY.” Type 380g, per the Bank Note Museum, covers that date only; the 1950 HH notes (Pick 380f) are another issue, in seven- or eight-digit serials. It is not the 1953 Boyacá commemorative 1-peso (Waterlow) or the Imprenta de Billetes blue 1-peso (Pick 404). This collection piece is shown in a sleeve, circulated, unslabbed.

Scarcity and printage

González White 2019 (BG# 044, p. 36) publishes 50,000,000 notes for 1 January 1954, eight-digit Series HH, serials 30,000,001–80,000,000. The Bank Note Museum describes Pick 380g as that date of the ABNC 1 peso oro: Santander and Bolívar on the face, Liberty on the back. Numista groups the 1929–1954 design under N# 207727 and marks the 01.01.1954 Series HH date’s frequency at 45% among owners of the type. It is neither a proof nor a specimen. This record does not replace that BG# emisión with a BanRep denomination-year total.

Population

A PMG or PCGS census for serial 52170492 has not been independently verified. The note is shown in a sleeve, circulated, unslabbed.
