Contexto Tucumán covers the 1894-S dime at more than a million

Contexto Tucumán (3 September 2026, 18:02) reports that on 1 September an 1894-S 10-cent dime brought US$1,250,500 at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Rarities Night. It is the same sale already covered by Infobae: the Q. David Bowers provenance piece, almost 36 years off the public block.

Nine known from twenty-four

The firm, according to the daily, cites 24 struck at San Francisco in 1894 and nine survivors. The type is the Barber series (Charles E. Barber): Liberty in profile and ONE DIME in a wreath, with the mint’s S. Bowers bought it in 1957, at 19, in the Empire Collection, for US$4,750; it later sold for US$6,000, US$77,000 (1987), and US$93,500 (1990). Contexto puts the 1957–2026 rise at about 263 times.

Since 2005, Stack’s Bowers says, only five 1894-S dimes had reached auction, at US$1.3 to 2.16 million. This bid landed below that band and below the US$1.5 million pre-sale estimate Infobae records. The buyer was not named. More detail in Contexto Tucumán (opens in a new tab).
