Handstamp

A mark applied by hand in ink onto an already-printed note — as opposed to an engraved design — to record a later event, such as an interest payment or a depository’s endorsement. This collection’s Confederate T-40 $100 carries interest-paid handstamps from Raleigh, North Carolina, dated 1864 and 1865.
